Singer-songwriter Vaclav Havelka III wandered throughout his childhood in the rural parts of the country north of Prague, the very heart of Europe, traveling with his parents, running through the woods, climbing trees, hills and wild places of Eastern Bohemia. He traded music by mail, developing his artistic roots through selfmade cassette-tape compilations full of grunge-rock, folk, country, and post-rock. While spending his youth on the geographical and cultural edge of the Czech Republic, Havelka with his hard working DIY aesthetics soon found himself on the frontiers of the Czech indie music scene, performing under the nick selFbrush, releasing several various solo recordings. He starts touring extensively around 2002 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, later through Europe and the USA, solo and with his band Please The Trees with which here released so far four records. Lion Prayer (Absent Hour Records, 2007), Inkalesh (Absent Hour Records, 2010), the captivating, beautifully produced and stylistically varied A Forest Affair (Starcastic, 2012) and live album A Live Affair (Full Moon, 2013.
During last US tour Havelka recorded with Please The Trees another album at the High Bias Studio in Detroit with Chris Koltay (Liars, Women, Deerhunter, Holy Fuck, No Age, The War On Drugs, Akron/Family) which is planned to be released in Summer 2015. Alongside performing Havelka has written music for several theater productions (including a staged version of Lars von Trier’s Dogville at the Estates Theater), screen music for motion picture Mista (with David Boulter of Tindersticks), soundtrack for movie Listopad (Garry Griffin), from which a collaboration with Martin Tvrdý known as Tvrdý/Havelka has started, hosts his own show on Radio Wave, fka Natural Bridge, now called Echo Václava Havelky, and – as part of the promotion company Scrape Sound – brings leading international alternative rock and country artists, such as Swans, Mudhoney and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, to Prague.
